Launch of ‘Joan’s Book’ 20th Oct 2010

October 19, 2010

Tomorrow night, I, and most of Lucan Writer’s Group, will be attending the launch of Joan O’Flynn’s posthumous publication, ‘Joan’s Book.’ I am delighted to see that this book has taken form and is out there. I believe Joan would have wanted that.

On the eve of her book’s launch, the one thing I’d really like to emphasise is that although Joan is remembered for so many things – being witty, irreverent, hilarious, but always, always kind – she was also a great and under-appreciated writer. She was a founder member of the Lucan group and in her own unique way kept the group in check, civilised, benevolent to new members, and open to new ideas. Her generosity and encouragement to others often led her to put energy into championing other people’s work – she did that for me and countless others.

So, I am glad that now her work is going to have it’s moment and publication. ‘Joan’s Book’ is an anthology of Joan’s poetry and prose. Her ‘Collected Works’ so to speak. As a writer she had a sure, light touch and a humanist outlook. She was diverse and daring and wrote about unexpected and difficult subjects. There is a subtlety and integrity to her best work that only comes to the practised writer.

Many of the pieces in the collection will have an emotional resonance for the Lucan group as we will remember them read to us at some point. But beyond this book’s personal meaning to friends and family is a real living book that is full of the wisdom and humour of a wonderful woman and writer. Cheers to Joan and her book.

The Launch takes place in Lucan Sarsfield’s GAA Club, 12th Lock, Newcastle Road, Lucan at 8.30.

The good lady would have appeciated this and tomorrow will be a day of celebration, not just because of the wonderful person that Joan was, but also of her talent as a writer. It will be a treasured book on my bookshelf always.
